Yes ... a good analogy is the volume of a container ... if your original
device's gamut is large, then you have to throw some of the color info away
to put it into a smaller gamut. That is, large gamut color spaces can
define colors which cannot be defined in smaller color spaces. Both these
color spaces should be considered large enough for archiving and editing
16bits ... ProPhoto being the larger, and probably larger than your
scanner's color space. My own scanner's space is very similar to Ektaspace,
and is the one I use ... and it adapts well to AdobeRGB for general editing.
