Chris,
In a word? Yes.
There is no "perfect" display but an overwhelming number of my high-end
clients are switching to the ACD as fast as their budgets will allow them.
Why? Because it helps them produce better results faster.
Don't get me wrong. The ACD has its weaknesses, but overall it's just a
better, more efficient tool for serious color-critical work.
On the negative side the ACD has a higher price, narrower useful viewing
angle and slightly weaker blue saturation than most CRTs. But on the plus
side it is actually cheaper than many top-of-the-line CRT monitors, roughly
twice as bright, displays richer shadow contrast, eliminates flicker, has no
dangerous emissions and offers a whopping 22" usable real-estate of 1600 x
1024 razor-sharp pixels. On top of that it has a more stable white point
than any CRT I've ever seen, and rock-steady gray balance throughout the
whole dynamic range.
The much-touted viewing angle "problem" seems a non-issue. Users just make
sure they stay on-axis for critical balance judgements. In the words of one
large publication's imaging director "It quickly ceased to be a problem."
The really exciting news is that LCD is still in its infancy, with a ton of
research pouring in. Apple showed us just how far it could jump in one leap,
but stay tuned. What CCD technology did to photomultiplier scanners and
vidicon cameras, LCD will do ten times over to those hot, fat, ugly, dim,
flickering, power-hungry CRTs that hog our desktops.
Take a picture of your workstation and seal it in an envelope. Open it a
couple of years from now and tell me I was wrong. I'm sure some
traditionalists will go on pumping electrons till their CRT stock options
expire, but not me. Once you work with a properly profiled ACD (gotta use
ICC Display - no other software can handle it as well) you'll never go back
to CRT.

Don, I'm wondering if you could clarify if you are stating that the Apple
