Daniel,
I originally thought the HCT would be inappropriate for flat bed scanners
because they often suffer from severe optical flare. Flare can make the
color from a light colored patch spill into its darker neighbors and I
thought this might do more damage with the HCT's smaller and closer-spaced
patches than with the relatively large patches of the IT8.
In practice the effects of flare don't seem any worse on an HCT than an IT8,
perhaps because the patches are arranged in color groups to minimize the
effects of flare. Any flare a patch receives from its neighbors is usually
of the same color family.
At www.hutchcolor.com/HCT_examples.htm you can view and download IT8/HCT
comparison images created on a Scitex Eversmart with typically dusty optics
and extreme optical flare. The examples were made with an IT8 and an HCT
that were both measured fresh on the same transmission spectrophotometer
just prior to profiling.
As you might expect, there is little apparent difference between the two
profiles on normally-exposed originals, or in this case on the uncorrected
scans. But when you start digging into shadows, the examples clearly show an
improvement in colors that were almost black in the original, which was the
original intent of the HCT.
I hope this helps.
Don
