I called Lacie tech support. They said that the Blue Eye calibrates the
hardware. Anything else calibrates the software which was meaningless
according to them. But you find that not to be the case.
Once again, I am totally confused.
It's not so bad as long as you remember that calibrating and
profiling a monitor has three components:
1. Tuning the monitor to the target white point and brightness.
2. Fine-tuning the display system (monitor, graphics card, etc) using
the graphics card - done with the profiling software.
3. Profiling the monitor/display system (also done with the profiling software)
Now #1 can be done either by hand using the controls on the front of
the monitor or through an extra serial/ADB/USB link to the screen
like the Radius Pressview/Barco/Apple ColorSync/ or LaCie Blue
systems. Through a cable is easier - as you don't need to do it by
hand - but rarely offers anything you cannot do by hand.
#2 is the part they referred to as "calibrates the software". This is
an essential part of any calibration but if #1 was done well, the
computer does not have to make much correction in #2
#3 is the final bit that actually creates the profile.
So - if you want the ease, go with the Blue Eye system. If you are
happy doing it yourself, then go with just the monitor and get an
external system. LaCie would be very hard pressed to prove that their
system actually creates a better calibration/profile than any other -
IMHO.
as for...
Anything else calibrates the software which was meaningless
according to them.
meaningless may simply mean that it holds less meaning for them as
they cannot sell you more stuff. <g>
