I heard that there are two versions of Heidelberg CMM.
When making ColorSync 2 (I think) Apple was getting help from Heidelberg
creating an CMM. This resulted in Heidelberg CMM. Since then Heidelberg do
not support that version, but Apple continued developing "their" Heidelberg
CMM in ColorSync 3.x. So, now there are two versions of Heidelberg CMM. Can
anyone confirm this?
I'd like to offer our reply to this query ...
For obvious reasons we cannot disclose details of our arrangement with Apple
Inc., but we can provide this information as to the history of ColorSync and
the Heidelberg CMM:
In the early 90's Heidelberg (at that time Linotype-Hell) had developed a
complete CMM for our own products. The CMM was a result of many years of
development for color computing, which we had done originally for our high
end ChromaGraph image scanners. All the associated color computer hardware
eventually being reduced to a software kernel, this CMM, was now made
available to a broader range of applications, beginning with Linocolor.
In 1997 we licensed this CMM to Apple, and it became part of Apple's
ColorSync.
While we at Heidelberg have continuously proceeded with improvements to our
CMM, so too does Apple pursue further development work for their ColorSync
product. Each company having it's own agenda and market requirements to
serve. Therefore Apple's CMM and Heidelberg's CMM are two distinct choices,
each different in many aspects, both ICC compatible.
Meanwhile, Heidelberg continues to improve it's engine with regard to speed,
accuracy and other features and incorporates our newest CMM version in our
latest workflow products Prinergy 2.0, Delta Technology 7.0, and Meta
Dimension 2.5, our image capture products such as Newcolor 7000 2.0 and
Linocolor 6, and the profile generators Scanopen, Viewopen and Printopen all
at version 4.0.5 today. It is a living thing with ongoing development and
improvement, supporting Macintosh OS9, OSX and Windows platforms.
Our technology is not available as an isolated end-user product, but we do
continue in licensing it to business partners in our industry such as
Microsoft, Best, 3M and others.
