Here is what I've heard so far on these two questions:
Question 1:
Where can I find the authoritative listing
of what file formats (like GIF, TIFF...)
and what color spaces (like RGB, Lab...)
and what bit depths are supported by ColorSync?
ANSWERS:
None.
What's the deal here?
It seem like a critical piece of info,
a "feature" of ColorSync
that people would need to know.
(Maybe it's just too boring a question for this crowd?)
It must be buried somewhere on Apple's site,
but I can't find it.
(One click away from the ColorSync home page
would make too much sense.)
Question 2:
John Gnaegy's ColorSync automated matching scripts
"Match to CMYK" and "Match to Chosen Profiles"
appear NOT to support JPEG CMYK files.
I get an "Image space not supported" error message.
It appears to be the "Match" command in the scripts
that is producing this error.
How can I make this AppleScripted conversion function?
ANSWERS:

Yes that's true, CMYK JPEGs are not supported by the ColorSync scripting

JPEG plugin. It's not an error with the script, it's the JPEG plugin

My thanks to both.
In all fairness it's perhaps a question
that should be rephrased:
BETTER QUESTION?:
What file formats, color spaces, and bit depths
are supported by the current ColorSync Extension
(a "faceless background application")?
And of these, which can be handled with AppleScript?
I have found the easily adapted AppleScripts
for ColorSync VERY useful,
they save us many hours every day.
The CMYK JPEG obstacle was something
I did not anticipate, hence my desire for info
on exactly what is and isn't handled by these tools.
