I feel that, while color management is not a joke, it often appears to
be one.
Many of the art directors and designers I work with are not up to speed
with
managed workflows, in fact they have only recently gotten used to complete
digital workflows at all.
Therefore, if they ask for a CMYK file, I provide them with one. Hey, at
least they stopped
wanting a digital transparency made from the file first so they "knew
what to expect".
Several years ago I went to lengths to get my Iris printer to make valid
proofs for them.
Even then there were often discrepancies in the final press run, at
least to my eyes,
but the clients were almost always happy and kept coming back to me for
more.
These days I do less pre press stuff as I've moved my concentration to
making final art
for photographers and other artists with my Iris and other printers.
For the pre press stuff I still do, I simply make an Epson print from
the RGB scan before
converting to CMYK and give this as a proof and they are still happy and
get what they want
from the press run.
I also have taken to sending both an RGB and CMYK file out as the final
job, but I know most of these people just use the CMYK file and don't
understand why they are getting the RGB one.
