I've got some print samples here, got them at Print'01 where I also got
to see the printers.
In terms of quality, it is comparable to HP1220C, maybe a tad better, but
with the BIG advantage of using different inks, more alike the ColorPro
GA's ones. The problem with the 1220C was the very fluorescent magenta,
the DesignJet 10/20/50's inks seem very well tuned to graphic arts as the
ColorPro GA's ones were.
As with other HP models, prints look a little "softer" than Epsons; seems
that the inks sort of bleed a little more... in spite of producing very
small dots (much smaller than an Epson 5000!), the overall appearance is
always softer than an Epson.
Looking under a loupe, everything appears more "hairy" or fuzzy; as if
dots disintegrate or spray more than an Epson's. I also saw some slight
misregistration that you don't see naked eye (ie on rich black text).
Both things combined are probably the reason for that softness.
I didn't stay to see the machines printing, so I didn't witness the
times. Claims 4 minutes for best quality, which would be almost three
times as fast as an Epson 5000.
I didn't look at the HP Rips, but I did look at the Heidelberg one. In my
opinion, it doesn't hold a candle against BestColor. No linearization, no
ink limiting... only advantage would be the ability to control and
monitor from a browser (BestColor had that in an earlier version, but
it's no longer there).
In fact, the web/java interfase is the only interfase, which makes it a
little unresponsive.
Besides that, all the expected places to select your profiles and
rendering intents. A little confusing, though, the fact that is seems to
have cross-rendering available too. Three profiles: press
(input/reference?), printer(I guess simulation?), proofer(final
destination?) but the people at the show seemed to think you had to
select the proofer profile twice, both in the "printer" and in the
"proofer" boxes... not clear to me either.
10ps: single user HP Rip, mac or pc (scanvec/amiable?)
20ps: multi user HP Rip, mac or pc (same?)
50ps: multi user Heidelber Rip.
The 10ps and 20ps, I believe they only allow one queue, thus only one
color management setting. The Heidelberg rip (50ps) does allow multiple
queues and thus multiple simulations or colormanagement settings.
All of them, however, only drive one printer per Rip. As is true of
BestColor too.
Can someone point me to proofing Rips that can truly drive multiple
printers from a single Rip/server box/license?
By "truly" I mean each printer has its own profile or linearization, or
even different models as I believe some can do...
