I am shocked that so many people have reported having good
results with the Optical Spyder and LaCie monitors . We have
seven LaCie 22" Blue II monitors at our office and every single
one come out with a red cast when calibrated with the Spyder.
This has been confirmed by other offices within our company
using the Spyder as well. We had been using the X-Rite DTP-92
until Optical suggested we "upgrade" to the Spyder. We found it
to be completely unusable, so we continue to use the X-Rite with
Optical 3.1 which produces neutral results.
A second, and very disturbing problem, has been with the LaCie
monitors. After six months of use (eight hours a day, five days a
week) the monitors' brightness began to fade so that calibration
brightness targets could not be achieved because the
brightness was maxed out. We sent back all but two for
replacement, but even replacement models sent to us suffered
from the same problem. Currently all the models are relatively
stable, though the brightness is drifting (we calibrate once a
week), but the calibrated monitors still do not match each other
when compared side by side, this is especially noticeable in the
blacks. Several of the monitors suffer from other problems such
as defects in the glass, and strongly casted blacks that
warranted sending them back as well.
I wouldn't say that the blue casing or shade is problematic, but
those would be the least of my worries.
We would prefer to use Barcos (we used to have them), but their
cost is prohibitive for a facility with many workstations. Certainly
there must be a monitor out there that is of consistent quality
from monitor to monitor.
