No I don't think it's a lot of hype. We're Profiling the Kodak ProBack and
the results are definitely better. The "standard" profile is OK and really
not that bad however when I create a custom one it corrects any variation in
lighting, lenses, and the unique characteristics of the CCD in the camera.
My experience has been that if the lighting remains solid the profile does
too. You still can re-position lights and move them around but if you make
huge changes you might have to re-profile.
You mentioned sunlight. If this situation has lots of sunlight that could be
a problem. I've done most of my testing under more controlled lighting.
The bottom line I think is that it does help, and in some cases quite a bit,
but if the photographer does not understand that these other variables will
kill him then trouble looms.
