The default "Save for the web display" is uncompensated RGB, i.e the raw
numbers go to your monitor. IF you have you Mac set up for gamma 1.8 and
file actually has a gamma of 2.2 (sRGB) it will look like crap.
To the left of the Save button in the SFTW window you will see a little
triangle (top right of the preview window) - click it. Now cycle through
the 4 options:
1. Uncompensated color
2. Standard Windows
3. Standard Macintosh
4. Use document color profile
The second one displays on the basis of sRGB
The second on the basis of Apple RGB
The third uses whatever profile you have embedded in the image.
If your going to embed a profile - use sRGB and so option 2 and 4 will
display correctly
SFTW isn't as color dumb as some would have you believe. Hopefully this
should resolve your difficulties
