I'm still testing the latest Splash, EFI and Imation (aka Kodak Polychrome
Graphics) RIPs running a Xerox Docucolor 12, but preliminary results favor
the Imation RIP, their Matchprint server 2.0 (I tested 1.0 when it came out
and it did the worst in the bunch). We checked how the ink got laid down,
clarity and sharpness, shadow and highlight detail, how it is
linearized/calibrated, and most of all, accuracy in using simulations.
We're still in the process of measuring targets, but to the naked eye the
accuracy of the Imation RIP in simulating a Matchprint proofer was
noticeably better. We tested it using a custom profile, not a canned one
made for Imation stock. The user interface, on the other hand, is horrible
and reminds me of Windows apps in the 80s. The Splash interface, on the
other hand, is quite eye-catching and easy to use, Fiery's ColorWise is
getting better but still underdocumented and a little over-difficult. EFI
in general has pretty poor documentation, but the phone support is pretty
dang solid. All 3 of the above RIPs use a densitometer or spectro to
linearize (actually, you can scan in Kodak targets on the Splash instead,
but it has very few patches) -- one problem is that the Imation only
supports the Spectrocam currently, and I think you may even HAVE to buy one
with their RIP. On the other hand, a Spectrocam is a good instrument!
The DC12 is a decent machine and seems fairly stable as toner-based devices
go. I've serviced some of them along with a DC40 for a couple years, and
have run into intermittent issues, especially with networking where the
scanner doesn't seem to find the registration marks of the Kodak target in
calibration on a Splash G620 RIP. They are very easy to maintain, in that
you can change the fuser oil, cleaning web, and toner and just about
anything else very easily without making a service call. Xerox tech support
can be a labyrinthine series of hierarchical tests but when you finally get
a Color Analyst to help out, they know what they're doing. They also have
on-line chats and email lists and web sites for their copiers that are
actually pretty dang informative.
And by the way, Xerox is releasing a new printer that's exactly the same as
the DocuColor 12 without a copier scanning bed. I can't remember what
they're calling it.
Okay, I've gone on too long. Hope this helps somebody!
And, by the way, I don't work for or receive any money whatsoever from any
of the companies mentioned in this email.
