Dithering is used to counter some of the quantization side-effects of
converting with 8bit resolution (i.e., precision). It is assumed to be not
needed given the better resolution 16bit offers. The confusion may come
from it being offered as an option in PS6 ... in PS5, 8bit P-toP conversions
were always dithered, as were 16=>8bit conversions ... and I don't know when
Adobe adopted as a general practice.
