Bob, I'm talking about a custom ink set I formulate myself. It's
actually hextone, for Epson 6 ink printers: black ink in the K channel,
dark/medium cool gray in the Cc channels, dark/medium warm gray in the
Mm channels, and (warm) light gray in the Y channel.
I separate grayscale images into CMYK for these inks with Photoshop
curves, then print in CMYK mode to produce split tone b&w prints.
Adjusting the separation curves gives me control of cool v. warm in the
mid-tones. Neutral dark values and warm light values create a look like
platinum-palladium prints.
With an accurate profile for my ink set from ProfilerPRO, I can preview
separated images on my monitor, try different separation curve sets, and
make final tonality adjustments (using the composite CMYK curve) before
printing.
