Never missing an opportunity to reveal my ignorance, this brings to mind a
question I've had for quite a while regarding profile conversions. I can
fully appreciate the need for a rendering intent when performing a
Lab->Device Colors conversion as there are likely Lab colors that are not
available in the destination/device color space.
What I DON'T get is the need for a rendering intent choice when doing a
Device->Lab conversion as it is not possible for there to be Device colors
that can't be mapped to a Lab color. In other words, isn't a choice of
rendering intent totally irrelevant (or ignored) when performing ANY
Device->Lab conversion?
In the case of the BestRIP where one can reasonably assume that the Source
CMYK space ("Cromalin" CMYK) is smaller than the Destination ("inkjet"
CcMmYK) space, would the choice of rendering intent, other than white point
mapping, even matter or change the printed results? IOW, would I see a
difference between Colorimetric and Perceptual rendering in this case (other
than paper white simulation)? If yes, why?
Ignorant inquiring minds would like to know.
