Yes, I have found similar behavior (with Apple's ProfileGammaTagger):
a) If you choose "None", then any vcgt tag which may be present in the
profile is removed.
b) If you choose one of the standard tags (Linear, Mac Standard, Page-White
or sRGB), then this replaces any existing vcgt tag (if one was present) or a
new vcgt tag is added (if the profile did not already have one).
c) But choosing one of the displays does not alter the original profile in
any way (a pre-existing vcgt tag remains unchanged, and if the profile had
no vcgt tag, it is not given one).
Is this a bug? David Hayward, are you out there?
