If you are having difficulties with NCA (as I was) check this out, it might
work for you. The printer needs to be put in a more linear state in order to
be profiled properly. I ranted and raved about that on this list several
years ago now. (I have discovered this to be equally true of scanners by the
way.)
I have done extensive testing in both the automatic and photo-realistic
modes and also the various media settings. You need to experiment with these
vaiables for a given ink/paper combination to determine what gives you the
most satisfactory linear result. Keep in mind that media = K generation/ink
coverage and Automatic and various versions of Photo Realistic =
Linearization.
At any rate, with my testing I tried to discover whether or not these driver
settings were changing the files or just the behavior of the
printer/firmware. To this end I printed all manner of "bad" images, you know
flat histograms, really contrasty, huge color shifts etc. There did not seem
to be any attempt by the driver to alter the files when printed. Therefore I
concluded it was safe to assume that several (not all) of these settings
represent a "locked down" but far more linear state, and that they effect
the behavior of the printer only and don't alter the file.
The resulting profiles seem far superior to anything I can achieve with
either NCA or any combination of NCA and linearization curves.
A two dimensional graph would suggest an NCA profile has a larger color
gamut than using one of these other settings. However I believe this to be a
chimera as in three dimensions most of the larger gamut colors are in the
deep 3/4 tones where they don't serve any practical purpose.
Best wishes,
Nick Wheeler
