IT8's: There are 2 typical types of IT8 charts
1) IT8 Chart with exact measurement data. There still are available.
I believe Kodak, Agfa, and Fuji and then an independent or 2.
These tend to cost much more.
2) IT8 Charts with averaged measurement data.
IT8 Charts are processed in very large batches under very tight
conditions.
Various IT8 Charts are pulled from the batch. Measured then averaged.
Averaging is done with the expectation that the processing is consistent
from beginning to end. (Kodak IT8's are typically OEM'd as average). And
yes one batch may look different then from another batch. It's having
the right chart with the right data that is important to the end-user.
All the charts fall in a data "spec's", which is a little flexible.
Purchasing or being given an IT8 chart without data is not too much of
an issue. You would go to the Kodak ftp site and download the averaged
data of that IT8 chart. The code is at the lower left.
You can always measure your IT8 chart (time, cumbersome, and difficult
with some devices). Then you would have exact data of that IT8 chart to
create a new profile and compare with. Just be sure that your device is
properly calibrated and that you are under low light (indirect)
conditions.
Even if you buy the exact measured IT8 chart (which I think is good
thing), don't be surprised if you still need to edit the profile. And if
you are really particular you will edit and then re-edit and edit again
and then re-edit and help you cannot end edit. HA! HA!
As for which application to buy, I have been successfully using Kodak's
Profile Editor. There are happy CMS campers that use other software, and
they are doing a good job as well. Are you going to get higher quality
scans? I think you would. There are other factors that make up a CMS.
The device measures - the CMS analyzes data. How it formulates that data
is important. Add a twist - and use a color matching method (CMM), and
boom that effects your color. So which one? I use Kodak's CMM. Which
ever you use, be consistent (heard that before).
Also, I believe that in order for the CMS to work, you need to be
consistent from start to finish. "Finish" does not simple mean from scan
to print. It may mean scan to desktop, then handed off with the embedded
information. Finish is were you need it to be. If you were going from
scan to print then I would recommend considering a complete
full-featured system. Why? Half of an input to output CMS system is
likely to produce other issues at some point of the process. If the
initial investment to high at this time, then consider remote profile.

I'm sure, show different results from the same scanner. Of course, each
