What's "high end newspaper proofing"?
That's where papers are prepared to pay serious
money to get their proofing right, rather than
doing it "on the cheap" with whatever RIP they
happen to find at the corner store. There is a lot
of gear around for producing proofs for glossy
press output, but matching the exact look of newsprint
is actually a lot more demanding in a technical sense,
and just as important in a commercial sense.
A lot of money can be saved in avoiding advertising re-work,
when the customer can be shown a proof of their ad. that
looks exactly like the final product. Noticeable improvements
in the final newspaper result can also be achieved when
an accurate and stable proof is available to run the
presses to. This is of particular importance if press plants
are scattered over a country or the world.
From what I've seen, the print quality of newspapers in the US
should not be taken as a benchmark for what is possible
in this cost sensitive, high volume area.
