Keep in mind that the printer manufacturers heavily subsidize
the cost of the printer by making all the money on the ink
and paper. The RIP manufacturer has to make their money
in one go at the start. You really need to look at the
cost of the _system_ that solves your problem, rather
than agonizing over the division of cost between each
component.
Is it really a problem that the RIP costs more than the printer,
if it is the RIP that makes it a proofing system, rather than simply
an expensive way of dirtying paper ?
