IMO a RIP that incorporates ICC color space conversion takes account of the
fact that not all page objects are color managed at the application level,
typically EPS, DCS and PDF. The other option is a RIP without ICC color
space conversion in which case a color server is needed in front of the RIP.
But getting by without a RIP is not really doable as more and more workflows
move to full page PDF assembly.
