A monitor profile contains two parts: the profile description, and the video
card corrections. Simply turning off the monitor compensation in Photoshop 5
does not tell the whole story, as it leaves the larger component (the video
card corrections) unchanged. On the Mac its easy to flash the video
corrections by simply selecting a new profile, so seeing the results of
changing profiles is as simple as changing them in the Monitors control panel
(instant video correction change) and then clicking on a Photoshop window
(instant change to new profile). On a PC its necessary to do something like
run OptiCAL and toggle the video corrections to the monitor on and off, as
well as change your monitor profile associations in the advanced monitor
settings, but its easy to not get the right combination this way! Remember
that when you restart, OptiCAL is not going to honor the profile selected in
the OS, but load your most recent OptiCAL profile.
