Yes...funny. I understand the necessity of a good RIP when for instance,
one is proofing and needs to have that degree of control over the device.
What I also understand (after much trial and error, and error, and error)
is that the manufacturer-supplied printer drivers are pretty lame for
getting high-end output. It still doesn't make any sense to me to buy a RIP
that costs more than the printer if all you want to do is get predictable,
high-quality final prints. This should be something that is achievable with
supplied drivers. What I would love to see is a "Expert" printer driver
that would give the user a few additional controls, but not as many
features as a full blown RIP (in some cases costing almost twice as much as
the printer) in the interest of keeping it affordable. I would think most
people buying this kind of thing wouldn't even need PostScript capability.
I'd gladly pay extra when buying a printer for this option! I'm not holding
my breath as I'm still waiting for Epson to write OS X drivers that had all
the features the System 9 ones had.
The industry sells these printers with the idea that decent color is easy
to achieve using technologies like PIM and ColorSync. Not! To do it
properly I need to go out and spend at least $1000 on a third party RIP
(and get a degree in color management). This seems like short change when
paired with a $15,000 printer, but not with an $800 desktop model. I think
a middle ground solution (a good one!) needs to be introduced. Many of us
don't need (and can't afford) a pre-press level RIP...just something to
make profiling these damn things a little easier.
