Honestly, when was the last time you heard of a dongle failing? Used to
happen with the older ADB dongles but I can't say I've ever heard of it
happening with parallel port and the newer USB dongles. At any rate, I much
prefer dongles over wacko schemes like PhraseMatch and similar schemes.
Even the USB ones fail pretty good when you accidentally put a
22-inch CRT on top of them (yes, I've seen it happen, on deadline, on
a weekend).
I'm not a big fan of the PhraseMatch stuff, but I confess that I am
getting pretty sick of buying USB hubs just to accomodate my
ever-increasing collection of dongles. And that's just the ones I
actually use. I have a ridiculous collection of mostly-unlabelled
little thingies for all sorts of ancient weird junk that I just might
need someday.
I can't afford the luxury of a no-dongles policy myself, but they suck.
