Yes, quantifying a device's gamut does nothing to indicate the colors it
is/isn't able to reproduce. At that point you're really nowhere near
describing the gamut of the device because you're not putting it anywhere
inside the sphere that is L*a*b*. Using the data this way is about as
ambiguous as the sentence "25% said that they would eat Cheerios in the
morning if they were chocolate-flavored." 25% of what population: Kids under
10? Adults over 40? People in China?
However, it does answer the question: "How many colors can it reproduce?"
which was the original poster's desired result. It can produce N% of L*a*b*
(and if you do the math there, you're fine). I don't recall the original
post asking anything at all about the gamut of the press, just the number of
colors it reproduced.
