I have been experimenting this evening with two profiles generated
with MonacoPROOF using identical data.
The first profile was created with Perceptual as the rendering intent.
The second profile was created using Relative Colormetric rendering
intent.
At the moment, I am inclined to think that the Rel Colormetric
profile gives significantly better results. The printer is an Epson
7600, paper Photo Rag, printed using the Epson driver, printing from
PS 6.
The main difference was in some slight posterization or banding
visible in high contrast reds. The subject was a still life, and the
reds were tomatoes. Where the light caught the tomatoes, there is a
visible orange band at the point of transition from dark red to the
highlight using (or soft proofing) the perceptual profile. This
virtually vanishes using relative colormetric rendering intent in
creating the profile and printing.
This seems to run contrary to the usual dogma that says use
Perceptual for photographs.
These are just preliminary observations, but if anyone else has found
similar results, I'd be interested to hear about them.
