The confusing thing is that when I open the monitor control panel and
change to another profile the monitor changes but when I change it
back to the one I was using it doesn't change back.

Sounds like the second profile doesn't have a VCGT tag. Any profile you create with Apple's display calibrator will have a video card gamma tag, but some other profiling packages don't put those in profiles.
