I think if I was spending the "big bucks"
to produce a top quality book of my photos -
I might consider looking beyond the
4 color process. 6 or 8 color printing
with the appropriate varnishes,
aqueous or UV coatings.
Of course all this color management comes into
play (even more) in the Hi-Fi process as well.
I would think if your printer is familiar with his press
and the stock and inks you have chosen,
your concern should be getting the
proper dots on the plates to produce what you want.
Proofing - it always comes down to proofing environments.
If you really need to see what is happening and
you are going to profile everything,
Skip the direct to plate - and go with film and
analog proofs. Then you are seeing your dots.
Almost always, your printer can hit an analog proof from final film.
MAYBE the dots will not be "as perfect" (maybe)
as DTP but if you are in a top end environment -
film might just be the best option.
