You'd lose a ton of data! The neg has far more tonal data then you can
possibly get on a print. The print has it's own H&D curve to complicate
things. By scanning the neg on a good scanner, you can get every drop of
tonal data the neg has to offer.

Just what isn't available to you in masking in 16 bit you need? You know you
can take a 16 bit file, save an 8 bit copy, use any selection tools you need
and transfer that selection to the 16 bit copy.
