Hi All,
Is there a process (or utility) that lets you see the location of a specific
out-of-gamut color in Lab?
The application would be to simulate colored vinyl using 4-channel CMYK or
6-channel CMYKOG inkjet printers on un-tinted vinyl inkjet media. Not much
different in effort than Pantone Solid-to-Process Ink guide for spot color
in offset printing...
First, it would be desirable to understand *if* the target color could be
printed using composite inkjet printing by using the Lab values read from
the source colored vinyl with a spectrophotometer like the X-rite DTP22.
(Photoshop Gamut Warning may let us know it *is* out of gamut, but not how
drastic/far/etc...) By knowing the position in Lab coordinates, we could
theoretically graph the gamut surface and locate the color (in or out of
gamut). Steve Upton's ColorThink?
Second, if it could _not_ be printed *without* some type of gamut mapping,
then how would you determine the nearest (mapped) equivalent? (Use Relative
Intent on a solid patch of color and use the ICC profile of the target vinyl
media?)
Third, how do "coated" and "uncoated" (read laminated and unlaminated,
respectively) surfaces affect the perceived color in efforts to help reach
(or hinder) the desired Lab value? Most graphics "pop" when laminated,
acting like saturation is improved. Profile after lamination???
Fourth, and lastly - since ICC profiles are built around a theoretical white
point of 5000K, exactly how does this affect our profile when the print is
viewed under outdoor daylight conditions (approx.. 6500K?) - excluding
metameric issues with pigments/dyes, please - as that is a whole 'nudder
conversation.
Thanks for the input fellow listers...
Sincerely,
John Williams
