Brett,
It is my considered judgment that you really have to completely separate the
two workflows. Different hardware, software, mindset, everything.
For my production workflow here I use a Scanview F8+ and Color Quartet
software (analogous to a Heidelberg setup with one of their high end
flatbeds and Linocolor). Out comes AdobeRGB or SWOP cmyk, a few tweaks a la
Margulis, and its off to the races. This is a very efficient setup, with one
operator (me) able to crank out 40 - 50 saleable images in a shift. More
capable operators with newer hardware/software could easily triple that
number. Scitex comes to mind....
16 bits, fuggetaboutit.
But the lightjet and the Epson 10000, now that's where my heart is. I do the
above to pay for this. Optronics Colorgetter scanner, most editing is done
via myriad custom scanner and workingspace profiles. Bits and Bytes all over
the floor, gotta sweep 'em up at the end of the day. Photoshop 6.x, long
distance calls to bug Joe, Don, John and Mark - the Spectroscan and
Profilemaker Pro are indispensable. Custom inksets, five or six Epson
printers wandering around the office, cables everywhere. I can easily have
one image on console for a week sort of being fiddled with in the backround.
I have been fussing with the ultimate Colorgetter profile on and off for six
months now, and quadtone printing - now there is a wormhole. You get the
idea, lots of frustration, the occaisional breakthrough, not much
production.
Meanwhile the F8+, an old Fujix, Epson 5000 and a CD burner sit happily in
the corner pumping out 99% of my images and 100% of my $$$$, all in about
10% of my time.
It's no wonder there is an ongoing debate. Good grief Brett, you and I (and
many others) are trying to straddle parallel universes. Oh well, welcome to
the club. Never use a hammer to put in a tack, and always push down on the
flat end of the tack!
Best wishes
Nick Wheeler
