I would like to know if it is possible to create a CMYK profile that would leave all K blacks only K no CMY or does the nature of profiling forbid this. I understand that profiling converts images to LAB than to CMYK or RGB but I have to ask if this is possible. What I am trying to do is create a profile for my printer so that it can maintain all K shadows and text. I'm using praxisoft compass profile and an Xrite DTP 4100UV.
With the compass profile s/w you can't do it.
We are, however creating clean-black device link profiles for people as part of our ColorValet service (info not on site yet, request directly from me). I have also experimented with clean-black device profiles (neutral values map to K only) but I have yet to determine how valuable that might be in a normal workflow. It certainly creates dramatic results but I am not sure if they could be called pleasing... I guess it depends on the workflow.....
Feel free to contact me directly if you want more information.

Steve Upton
