Hello all--
First I'll make the requisite apology for being a newbie; I've lurked here
for a bit, and think and hope that I won't offend by asking my question(s),
but I do apologize if I offend anyone.
I'm trying to get my workgroup set up with a good color-managed workflow.
BACKGROUND: We've just purchased an HP 8550 Color LaserJet which will be our
composite printer. We use both G4s (OS9) and Windows (NT) boxes, with
Photoshop 5.5, FreeHand 9, and Quark 4.1, primarily for print. We use an
outside vendor for printing, and work mostly with images that have been
scanned outside as well.
FOREGROUND: I am having trouble finding a good, solid "here's how to" guide
for setting up color management. Every site or tutorial loves to tell me
about gamma, LUT, and additive vs. subtractive, and they've all got great
diagrams of color spaces (wireframes, boxes) and dramatic pictures of hands
with black fingernail polish...but at this point, I need the instructions
that say "Put your left hand on the wheel, right hand on the gear selector,
and push your right foot down on the throttle."
Having spent 18 months doing tech support for Opcode Systems (MIDI software
for Mac), I know that there's no way anyone can tell me _exactly_ what to do
in my setup--without actually being here, at a high $/hour rate. I'll settle
for a good real world example from which I can extrapolate for my situation.
Thanks to all of you who contribute to this list and others like it.
