The numbers (target values) you have posted for white, black and gray
midpoint are very common and are based on creating the appearance of neutral
gray in highlights, midtones and shadows. These values are good starting
point target values for defining the highlight and shadow on a image. But
they will not work on all images.
These target values are a good rule of thumb for a lot of images because
they define neutral gray and appoximatley 80% of all images have a near, but
not exactly, neutral gray highlight and shadow point.
So if you are trying to get an exact match of an image that has a near
neutral white and black you might not want to use these values because they
would reduce any color cast in that particular image reproduction.
But on the other hand if you wanted to reduce the color cast and make it
exactly neutral gray then use them.
And if you wanted a compromise between the color casted original and the
exact neutral gray of your target values then you have to find that with
some trial and error.
