Pantone areas? Photo work looks pretty much the same to me.
Just a noticeable change in the pantone colors. The values
for the pantone spotcolors are defined for each material and therefore
the selection can exceed what is possible with evaluation of the
destination profile.
Photo work should not be effected (unless you color a grayscale tif
with a pantone spotcolor).

then it's not much use is is?
Why not? Not everybody needs a separated workflow.
At that price range I wouldn't really expect too much.
Generally separated 4c jobs work (except that I found
photoshop eps files to make the printer hickup) which
make most of the jobs fit for the system.

can we proof pantone from Illustrator reliably to the HP 20?
I didn't try. Composite workflow should work as good as the tables form
HP are. Plus you'll have to use the certified materials (don't have
the list at hand right now).

hmm - sounds like a problem they need to fix?
Absolutely.

My opinion: A great printer for a great price. Excellent Colormanagement
interface. Internal linearization. Separate Inks. Very fast.
If you need a special test you can send me a file off list.
I still have the printer here for testing.
One other issue that needs fixing: In AbsCol intent the papercolor
is only simulated in the objects. White paper stays white.
