If I had to substitute PMS 185 for Magenta in an existing CMYK image and I
need to proof the resulting color in Photoshop, could I still resort to the
old Custom Ink Setup trick and use that as my starting point in
ConvertToProfile or as my Source Space at the time of printing to my desktop
printer?<
I would not go as far as to say 'proof' but perhaps 'pre-proof'...on screen
or perhaps print. You would have to get the overprint ink combinations down
right - which in theory should be easy to do by mixing simple LAB values for
your spot colour and regular process colour inks. Then this could be
assigned as the profile to the CMYK file for a proof set-up conversion to
desktop RGB or CMYK or whatever.
It seems more workable in theory for desktop printing than for making true
custom separations based off custom ink values.
I personally find the Custom CMYK to be very useful - even with Photoshop 6.
Custom CMYK 'tables' profiles far from dead - as far as I am concerned (it
would be nice if 'proper' profiles could have settings altered on the fly
for image or output specific situations directly from within Photoshop).
