I've got the identical setup with the exception of an AGP GeForce3 hooked
to my main monitor, a big Sony, and a PCI ATI Radeon driving my LCD
pallet monitor, AND I had a similar LUT-shuffle going on. What made it
apparent was the softproof in FlexColor not matching the scan when opened
in Photoshop. Now, unless I'm mistaken, both these programs are getting
their display information from the same source - the System profile in
the ColorSync CP - but neither matched.
I decided that I should create a fresh monitor profile. Since OptiCal's
reminder function hasn't functioned in the last few versions, I thought
it may have been too long since the last calibration. But when I
launched OptiCal the screen color changed as it loaded the correct LUT on
the Sony. Checking back with Photoshop and FlexColor, the scan preview
and scanned image were now a perfect match, but when I next opened the
Monitors CP to see what was going on there, instead of "BigSony Profile"
there was some generic profile in its place. As I remember - it gets a
bit foggy here - reselecting "BigSony Profile" did not make it stick.
What I do remember, however, is that my next trip was to the Pref's
folder where I dumped the Apple Monitor Plugins Prefs, ColorSync Cache,
ColorSync Configurations, ColorSync Preferences, Display Preferences,
Finder Preferences, Mac OS Preferences, Monitors Preferences, OptiCAL
Preferences, PreCal Preferences, and System Preferences. I then did
PRAM reboot, which is a pain on this computer because it resets the debug
settings so that the Mac no longer sees the 29160 SCSI card that drives
my system and apps HD. I have to do an Open Firmware boot from CD to set
things right.
Next I reset all the pref's I'd tossed and did a fresh calibration with
OptiCal. Since then the profiles have remained stable (and I check), one
other piece of monitor oddity has remained which I cannot solve and have
chosen to live with for the time being.
When I start my Mac, the Happy Mac and OS splash screen appear on the
Radion/PCI driven 15" LCD pallet monitor, and the big Sony starts up with
a 640 x 480 screen resolution. It stays this way for a while, and then
both screens go through a couple of blinks. Then, just before the icon
crawl begins, the Sony has a brief blackout before recovering at 1280 x
960, and now in possession of the OS 9.2 splash and all of the marching
icons.
Before my Pref's house cleaning, and on several occasions, I actually had
a complete monitor CP swap. The Mac would boot with the LCD as the
system monitor, the "BigSony Profile", and a resolution of 1024 x 768 -
the max resolution for that display - although I'm sure that, if it
could, it would be sporting 1280 x 960 instead. The big Sony's monitor
CP, on the other hand, would be LCD's. The resolution would be 1024 x
768, the profile set to "Studio Display AMLCD" and the CP's window would
even have the "Flat Panel" settings button, along with "Monitor",
"Color"' and "Preferences".
Fortunately, this anomaly disappeared with the old pref's, but the
startup blinking and swapping still continues, along with one other
annoyance. I have some folders as pop-up windows along the bottom of the
Sony. After every restart they end up on the other screen, and I spend a
minute or two "un-popping" them, dragging the bunch to the other screen,
and then working the view menu to get them back in their places again.
I realize that I'VE offered very little help here, Steve. ...but good
luck, God speed, and if YOU figure it out, send me the answer.
