If I had the option, of course I'd follow your suggestion, but it's
often kinda hard to persuade a publication to dedicate a print run to
printing a one-page target (and equally hard to persuade the press
shop to print the one-page target on the same press they'll use for
the publication).
Seriously ive measured targets with light and dark backings and the worse
results were when using newspaper or light stock, measuring the lighter
colours with a black background. I now use a greyish neutral card and its
about average. You could always generate several profiles relative to their
backings, or is this getting too obsessive?
