Have you ever actually compared a high res file (say page sized or larger
@300 dpi) with it's maximum compressed JPEG counterpart?
Try it. In most cases you will not see ANY difference if you print the files
or view them side by side. Even if you layer the two files in Photoshop and
do a difference calculation or turn the top layer on and off you will be very
hard presssed to see any significant difference at all.
That said, I'm not advocating the practice. I use it only when requested,
mostly because I fear that someone down the line will make multiple changes
and multiple resaves without changing file formats, in which case artifacts
can eventually become a real problem.
