He agreed this was a problem (which was good, but I still thought it was a
major oversight). I was asking that exact question because I figured our
printer maintenance utility might need a special feature to send raw target
data through.

I've got the inside edge here (I have the Lexmark source). The ColorSync
radio button (on the older OS X printer drivers) is much like the strange
light switch in your house that does not seem to do anything. I doubt I can
say much more than that... ;-)
The newer drivers do not have this control.
