I'm not sure how you are trying to manipulate the color. A general
purpose color correction system will create a color conversion
that achieves a proper (emulated) gray balance without limiting
the gamut in any way. If you are just manipulating curves, then
what you can achieve is very restricted.
My experience (wit da Scan-Am Color Profiler) with gray balance and
not limiting gamut has been:
Linearize.
Set CMY ink limits to peak densities in the linear curve.
Do not limit black in the ink limiting process prior to printing and
measuring target.
Double check (or re-measure) grayscale steps in the target. Convert
and check original and second grayscale measurements as Lab figures.
This indicates the neutrality of your grayscale data. This data can
also be directly edited and input into your measurements if you are
so bold.
Build profile a l` Henrik's 400TIL/HeavyGCR/lateBlack ink start (most
my BIS begin around 30 or 40 percent)/ and then set your
BlackInkLimit from the original peak in your linearization table.
Makes for pretty basic barebones neutral profiles given whatever
inkset you are using.
Also (mostly on matte medias) I've seen gamut expansions up to 30
percent and less fiddling with gamut mapping CMY to RGB.
It is often difficult to characterize the range of device behaviour
over which a particular approach will work. Often the only way is
try it and see what happens. Many subtleties about dealing with
printing device behaviour are still being figured out.
You nailed that one. Hope I'm on topic on this one...whewhew...;0)
