Unless you have the printer from Mars, they will result in a great deal of
clipping, but since the CMYK space is not larger than Lab, it would be
impossible to determine if any of this is Lab clipping, or device space
clipping.

That might be practical for a number of reasons, but the fact is that there
are certain CMYK colors (like pure Cyan) that for a given printer may exceed
AdobeRGB, and be reached by HonkingBigPhotoRGB. This is more likely to have
to do with vector colors than image colors. There are quite a number of
advantages and disadvantages at various points in the workflow to using
AdobeRGB or a larger RGB space. Pick your limitations.
