According to the engineer who wrote the Apple CMM this is how it behaves.
This is also true for the Heidelberg CMM, and the Adobe CMM (ACE).
Also, Photoshop (and I suspect other Adobe apps too) will do a null
transform when source and destination are the same.
It may only be a convention, but it's an extremely widespread one.
