Almost like people's hair is hand drawn or "cartoonish"? I've seen this
as well with some models of Epson printers when the No Color Adjust
setting is used, which is the setting the profiles from Epson were built
in, and presumably the ones you used as well. From what I've been told
it's a black generation problem. It happens with some media and not
others, based on the media type selection in the driver.
What I've done is use PhotoEnhance 4 with all three of its options
unchecked (tone, effect, and digital camera correction); I also turn off
Smooth Edge for all printing unless it's real low resolution stuff. Print
a new target, make a new profile, and use the profile with those settings.
It's more like shadows on flesh come out bad--instead of a smooth
shadow it looks like black and greenish like a cross between nubs and
moss. I'm starting to think it has to do with the photos themselves.
Looking at them onscreen and doing a preview using the profile, I can
see the problem (but to a smaller degree). I'm thinking the printer
is less forgiving of problem areas of the photo that may have been
caused by jpeg compression or weaknesses in the camera. If I print
the Kodak Photodisc test image it looks beautiful, so maybe my
relatives are really space aliens. (sometimes they act like they are.)
But profiling the PhotoEnhance 4 setting is a good idea. I'll give it
a go when I have a chance.
