I can create a ~ 1.2 gb file from a 4x5 and ~5gb file from an 8x10 with my 5000 dpi ScanMate
drum scanner. That is with true optical resolution, w/o interpolation or stitching. In my
experience I have not yet seen digital capture files from any device equal the quality from
4x5 transparencies + a drum scan. Scans from 8 x 10's should be even more impressive.
We have produced books utilizing 4x5 transparencies of art objects > drum scans > cmyk
separations > ctp with 10 micron stochastic screens printed on premium papers with
extraordinary ink densities that are truely astounding. Our books have won best of show
printing awards from (what I have been told) are the 2 largest juried printing competitions
in the world for each of the past 3 years. If anyone can do better with digital capture I
would love to see it.
