We've been tinkering with Photoshop 7.0 before we roll it out to
everyone, but, from a managed colour perspective it throws us a small
curve ball.
In version 6, the user could conveniently choose the source space
(either document or proof) and the destination space & rendering intent.
Now it requires a trip to the 'print with preview' dialogue box. In Mac
OS X this actually makes a lot of sense as the 'print with preview'
dialogue replaces the Photoshop option in the printer driver drop down
menu... but in OS 9 this is new, and you proceed directly to the printer
driver dialogue, so it created some confusion on the part the two
designers we have testing it. As we work in a managed colour workflow,
this small change will require that we update or colour cheat sheet and
conduct a training session dedicated to this matter.
It's not a big deal, but it ties into another niggling printing issue
that we have with Illustrator (both 9 & 10). Unlike Photoshop,
Illustrator does not offer an option to choose 'proof' in the document
space so it is more difficult than necessary to make a document (say in
AdobeRGB) to simulate a press condition (say SWOP) on our Xerox 7700. As
the gamut of the 7700 is fairly wide in comparison to press, printing
into it does not provide a realistic preview of what we can expect on
press. Our designers understand this, but our account reps and clients
are less appreciative of the finer points of colour management. ; - )
Is there not some way that the folks at Adobe could dedicate a person or
two to making sure that the printing dialogue boxes in Photoshop,
Illustrator, InDesign & Acrobat look and behave as much as possible
alike to help with training (and adoption of colour management)?
For what it's worth...
