Functionally there should not be any difference. This "lower half of the
dialog box" is actually Adobe at work not Epson. So you could choose to have
Adobe do a mode conversion here if you want. Your could select a source here
(whatever the document space is) and then you select the appropriate printer
profile. No choice of CMM and no preview and no BPC choice etc. Dictated by
a combination of the profile and/or Colorsync preferences?
This is a routine that you could visualize as being "called" along with the
Epson Driver when you select File Print in Photoshop. Try "File Print" in
some other app (like the finder) and you won't see this part of the dialog.
So when you select a source and output you are telling Photoshop to do a
mode conversion here before passing the data on to the Epson Driver. If you
specify Same as Source you are telling Photoshop to do nothing same as if
you select Printer Color Management.

anything at all when you send a un-colormanaged file through it).
Essentially this is added to the dialog for clarity. You are telling
photoshop "do nothing the printer - can handle this" The color management
task is passed on to the Epson driver.
To make matters even more confusing the Epson driver can also call colorsync
and do mode conversions by clicking on Colorsync in the Advanced section of
the custom settings dialog. Here Epson will choose its canned profiles base
on what media settings you specify. Really works pretty well as does
photoenhance. Really the Epson driver does a pretty good job and would
probably satisfy the requirements of most end users.
As an aside, I am told thet PhotoEnhance is really working well at producing
a neutral grayscale on the 7600/9600. I also thought it worked well on the
5500.
I am going to copy this to the list as I think it is important to get these
questions answered well. There is a lot more to be learned here.
