Well I just have to hop in here with my six cents worth...
I've used several camera profiling products over the years, and while some
were better than others, none were as good as ColorEyes. Now, "good" is
certainly a subjective term, so here's my definition: Far, far less time
spent on post-shoot adjustments of images, more time to do other, more
important things, like fly-fishing.
Although most of my shooting (sports action, specifically strobe-lit hockey)
can't be absolutely controlled in terms of lighting/exposure, it's pretty
close. With all other packages (including the earlier versions of ICC-Dcam)
I found myself still needing to make image-to-image color adjustments in
Colorblind Edit or Photoshop. This is greatly reduced with the ColorEyes
profiles.
As for the cost, and the lack of support for the DC chart, others have
already commented on the why's and wherefores, but allow me these
observations:
(1) Cost is a relative thing. In comparison to the time savings and
increased productivity, I think the price of ColorEyes is very fair. If
anything, Dcam might have been undervalued by the folks at ProfileCity. Just
my opinion.
(2) I was glad to read Andrew's take on the DC checker and Jedi Franz, with
which I certainly agree. In a world where there are not many absolute
answers, I'm always glad to find someone like Franz who you can just do what
he says and leave it at that.
So, although it doesn't help Paul or others who have already laid out the
cash for the DC Checker, the cost savings versus a "regular" ColorChecker
goes a long way towards making up the difference in the cost of ColorEyes.
With the improvements made in the software by much hard brain work and
testing on the part of Franz, Derrick Brown and Jack Bingham, along with a
comprehensive manual that makes it possible for most anyone who can follow
directions to make a great camera profile, and I think ColorEyes lives up to
its billing as the "ultimate tool" or whatever they said.
Now, just to whet the appetite, I've had the good fortune to beta test the
even more sophisticated 20/20 version, and it is stunning. With ColorEyes
20/20 profiles I am making only minor image-to-image brightness/contrast
adjustments. This bears repeating: Color adjustments are almost never
needed.
Regards,
Mark Buckner
