(sorry guys). If your print vendor has told you otherwise, he is lying.
John, I really gotta disagree here. Which 2 or 3 high end systems are you
referring to that don't pay attention to embedded profiles?
As long as the function is "turned on" I know that the Scitex Brisque system
does, and so does Agfa's Apogee, as well as Heidelberg's Delta, and even
though it's not a rip, Xinet's FullPress OPI (oft used as a front end to
RIPs in many shops) uses Color Verite to convert colors during the OPI. In
fact, most of the RIPs I've worked with have the ability to respect the
embedded profiles, disregard the embedded profiles, embed their own
profiles, or some combination thereof.
The major notable exception that I've come across is the Rampage system. It
only supports profiles to digital proofers with RAMproof and the Rampage ICC
option.
If 99% of your clients are buying proofs from you, and getting approvals on
those proofs, then it stands to reason that you'd be getting better results
without profiles. Chances are, you're doing the scans and digital
photography too, so if your client wants to make a color correction, you're
probably going to do it, right? It's classic closed-end system, and I'm sure
it works well.
I do agree with you on one point, however: the name of the game is cash.
Even the "high-end" printers I deal with care mostly about making the most
of the job. Since most of the folks supplying files are dangerously ignorant
of what they're actually sending in, then I can definitely see how it could
become standard policy to be talking up the "calibration" jive, while
secretly not turning on anything that would create more variables, and
therefore a higher risk of job rejection.
To say that embedded profiles are completely ignored is a HUGE
generalization that is unfair to both printers who offer that functionality,
and to independent color separators like me who regularly use profiles to
provide customers with high quality OUTSIDE of closed-end systems.
