(clip)...What I usually hear from prepress people is that
colorsync doesn't work (believe me I do have my doubts). Unfortunately
that doesn't leave me with any where to go.

Hmmm...I'm a prepress person working in what is mostly (still) a
closed shop. I use Colorsync color management and technics derived
around CM. Because our output requirements are targeted at more than
one single destination (press, web, color copier, inkjet, etc.) 'turn
off CM' is not an option.
I truly wish more printers would provide direct feedback to us
because quite simply those who don't only do when something is amiss.
The double benefit from those who do is we both seem to do less work
for the same pay. The funny thing about those who say 'it doesn't
work' is they can't seem to explain how 'turn it off' does work for
all the file types handed off to us. And the reality of clients
wanting to pay less essentially means we accept their files as-is, we
do our best by moving these files into colorspaces we can then see to
the best of our calibrated ability, and then at least base our
numbers on something more sound than default-this-app to
default-that-app. Custom profiling our devices works better than
simply calibrating and the variance we do see is far less than what
it was three to four years ago.
So, while some may say they will just mangle to four-plus colors into
their setup for the files we do hand-off to them, fine. That's how
they get the job done. From our end, if we can prove a color or plate
exists in any one of several devices (including an alternate press)
then we are doing our job. The ol' prepress 'cover thine own ass'
still has it's proof in the tasting of the pudding; it's just now the
pudding is ready-mix instead of grandmamma's secret homemade recipe.
ps: we still do Imation film keys.
